Bulun-Kul is located in the eastern part of the Alichur valley of the Murghab region at an altitude of 3700 m above sea level. Lake Bulunkul has a tectonic origin with a length 1.5-2 km and width - 200-500 m.The lake is mainly fed by the Koytezak river, but, in addition, numerous springs flow into it, located along the banks lakes. The total area of ​​the lake is 5.5 km2, the maximum depth is 2 m, the transparency of the water is more than 1 m, the air temperature in the lake area reaches 18-20º in summer, and 25-30º in winter. From mid-autumn to almost the end of May, the lake is covered with a thick layer of ice (up to 120 cm), the oxygen regime (6-7 mg / l) is quite favorable for the development of aquatic organisms, pH 8-9. The geographical coordinates of the lake are: (lat: 37.425321 N long: 72.581124 E).

It is considered as the coldest place in Tajikistan. In Bulun Kul, precipitation is 86 mm. From December till April the temperatures are extremely cold. Locals are saying that last year the temperatures went from 57 to 60 degrees cold.  Nowadays in Tajikistan Bulun Kul Lake is famous for its delicious fish. Because of the fish richness and in various aquatic plants in summer large flocks of mountain and other birds fly here. This lake locates in the high-mountainous plateau of the Pamir and for that reason has the same flora and fauna. Bulun Kul is locate  in the harsh highlands of the Eastern Pamirs. As it is in the altitude of 3700 meter it is in the zone of tereskenc and wormwood deserts in some places there are steppe (teresken, rose-flowered wormwood, pebble feather grass, etc.)
There are springs and shrines around the water. It has a lot of fishes. The length of the lake is 2-3km and its width is 800 meters. The thermal spring ‘Sasik bulok’ with the temperature of 10 degree Celsius is situated 7 km away from Bulunkul village where the water of the small river Alichor flows into Yashikul Lake. It serves as a kind of laundry place for the locals of Bulunkul. Tourists really stay there so as it does not appear to be valuable. Only those tourists riding a bike stay sometimes at the spring to take a bath and those climbing down the mountain walk. During the Soviet time, one small house was built there which is destroyed now. On spring 2020 a vehicle road was built there but still in a very bad condition. The Bulunkul Geyser is 16 km to the north-east from Bulunkul village there is a geyser that tourists like to visit. Depending on the weather geyser becomes active.
