Travelling to the Site
Shakhty Cave site  can be seen reached  with a day trip from Murgab. Visitors who are travelling  on the Pamir Highway connecting Murgab and Khorog  should turn into remote gravel track after 40 km. This road will finally lead them to the site of petroglyphs or as known Shakhty Caves. They are located in the Cheshtebe a V-shaped valley valleys with an arid landscape with very few landmarks. It is recommended that outside visitors should travel to the Shakhty with the local and knowledgeable guide, in particular historian or archaeologists. Tourist visiting the site, can also climb to the hill located above 4,200 meters. These paintings are considered the highest located rock art paintings in the world. The majority of them are preserved well, but some are damaged by weather. It is recommended to stay away from them. Touching the paintings by each visitors would further damage these fascinating piece of artwork. A natural mummy can be found inside the cave.
The visit to the Grotto Shakhty caves, can be combined with hiking to the hill. While travelling through graveled road visitor can watch relatively rich flora of the area, which is full of various medicinal plants. Thus, there is a chance to see also a herd of mountain ram Marco Polo (Ovis ammon polii). Observing wild animals from close distance in late autumn, winter, and spring is memorable activity in the Eastern Pamirs.
