The fortess of Kofirqala) is located in the village of Boghev, Suchon valley (Gund) of the Shugnan district of of GBAO. This fortress is 30 km far from Khorog. The fortress is located at an altitude of 2390 meters above sea level in the southwestern part of the village of Boghev on a large high rock. It is visible from the village on the main road connecting Khorog and Murgab.
There are several reasons for choosing this high hill to build a fortress. The first reason was that the high hill was a safe place. If the surrounding area was flooded or collapsed due to avalanche, the fortress would be safe from these natural disasters ,above the terrain level. The hill is a good location for building defensive fortress. It is almost impossible to climb this high rock from three sides. Thick walls with towers, windows for shootingand observation posts were built on the cliff above the Boghev gorge, which had strong defensive capability. Fortresses such as Kofirqala were built by the Tajik farmers to prevent the attack and influx of nomads from the Eastern Pamirs to the Western Pamirs.
